AREA is an arbitrated and indexed publication of the Research Secretariat of the Faculty of Architecture, Design and Urbanism of the University of Buenos Aires. It has been published since 1992 and has an annual periodicity. It offers a space for the diffusion and debate of research productions of urbanism, architecture, landscape planning, industrial design, graphic, visual communication, product, clothing, textiles, multimedia, among others, aimed at the academic and professional community of the different disciplines related to design.
PARTICIPATION IN THE PUBLICATION
You can submit articles dealing with general research topics that imply an original contribution to the corresponding discipline or field as well as participate in the special topics presented in the dossier and that will be announced in each call.
The main language of the journal is Spanish, although original articles in Portuguese and English are also accepted. In all cases the articles will be accompanied by a list of keywords for which the terminological use of the Vitruvio Network is recommended and a summary of approximately 100 words in the original language with its corresponding English translation. If the original language is Portuguese or English, the summary must also be in Spanish. In special cases, and with the approval of the author, translations into Spanish of original articles in another language will be published.
The magazine also publishes reviews of books, magazines, and / or audiovisual / documentary productions that fit within the aforementioned themes and objectives. These cases are considered in two ways: 1) the author, publisher or producer can send a copy of the material and, after evaluation, the AREA editor will invite a specialist to write the corresponding review; 2) An author may submit the evaluation by him already written to evaluation, continuing then the evaluation procedure detailed below.
The opinions and contents of the published works are the exclusive responsibility of the authors and do not necessarily compromise AREA‘s point of view.
EVALUATION PROCESS
The editors will review the articles received to determine their relevance to the general topic, the subject of the dossier and the adequacy to the formal requirements of the journal. If they do not comply with these criteria, they will be returned to make the relevant changes, if applicable, or will eventually be rejected.
Then, each work will be evaluated through a double-blind arbitration system, by which two external specialists will determine the feasibility of its publication, maintaining the anonymity of both the evaluated and the evaluators. In case of discrepancy in the evaluators’ recommendations, the editors will request one or more additional evaluations.
The evaluations for the articles of the dossier and those dedicated to the general themes of the journal will be carried out according to the following criteria:
- Relevance of the theoretical contribution.
- Thematic originality.
- Concordance between objectives and results.
- Management of information sources and bibliography.
- Clarity in the exhibition and in the writing.
The evaluations for the reviews of books, magazines and / or audiovisual productions / documentaries will be carried out according to the following criteria:
- Relevance on the text to which it refers.
- Relevance with the section.
- Internal coherence.
- Clarity in the exhibition and in the writing.
The works may be accepted without observations, with minor observations, with important or rejected observations. The results of the academic evaluation process will be unappealable in all cases. The accepted works will be notified to the authors and published according to the following criteria:
- Number of articles per number (accepted articles that are not included in the corresponding number, will be for later issues).
- Overall result of the observations made by the evaluators and of the corrections made.
- Origin of the authors of the article, giving priority to authors external to the FADU-UBA.
PROCESS
The authors will be notified of the acceptance, rejection or need to review the manuscript together with the comments of the evaluators. Once the article is accepted, the final file of the text and the files of the images will be required for the publication instance. After the publication, the author will receive two copies of the magazine by mail.
The acceptance of a manuscript for publication implies the transfer of copyright to the journal, in all its formats. The authors retain the right to use the material in future books or publications and to approve or veto the republication of their work, as well as the rights derived from patents or others.
CONSTANCE OF ORIGINALITY AND TRANSFER OF LAW
The works must be unpublished material in the language of publication and must not be sent simultaneously to other magazines or publishing institutions. A signed note must state that:
- it is an original article that has not been published totally or partially, both in print and electronically, on the day of its presentation or is being processed to be elsewhere;
- any image whose authorship does not belong to the author of the article, must include the corresponding authorization;
- the article does not infringe any law of copyright nor right of third parties in any way;
- the authors are notified that the acceptance of the manuscript for publication in AREA implies the transfer of the author’s rights to the journal, being able to publish them both in physical and electronic formats, including the Internet and the institutional repositories of the Universidad de Buenos Aires, under a Creative Commons Attribution License (CC BY-NC-ND 2.5 AR); and
- the authors retain the rights to use the material in books, future publications or on their website or personal blogs, encouraging them to disseminate it under the Open Access policy, with recognition of their initial publication in AREA.
In the case of multiple authors, proof of originality and transfer of rights will be signed by the person sending the file for evaluation on behalf of and with the authorization of the rest.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR PRESENTING FILES
The articles will be sent in Word format (docx, doc or zip—if necessary—) to the e-mails defined to each call for papers. The page format will be A4 with margins of 2.5 cm per side, in body type 12 with simple line spacing. Text sections are headed with subtitles, not numbers. The first-order subtitles are indicated in bold, the second-order subtitles in bold italics and the third-order subtitles, if any, in italics. The words or expressions that you want to emphasize, the foreign words and the titles of books are in italics. Articles may have an extension of 4,000 to 8,000 words and reviews of 1,000 to 1,500 words, including main text, notes and bibliography.
Sending for evaluation: the file must include the images in low resolution (to facilitate the electronic transfer). Only in the final instance will high resolution images be required.
Sending for printing: the final file must include the modifications suggested by the evaluators and editors, if any, and have deleted the images in low resolution keeping the references of their location in the text. In this instance, the file enters the final correction process prior to putting the page into the magazine.
Images: for the publication instance of the final version of the article electronic quality files are required for its reproduction in print. 1) The accepted formats for those images that correspond to photographs or illustrations are JPG and TIF with a resolution of 300 dpi at the final print size (it is recommended not to send sizes smaller than 18×18 cm); 2) if the illustrations are bitmap (pure black and white colors) the resolution must be at least 1,000 dpi; 3) the vector drawings should be sent in EPS or PDF format and if they include typographies, they should be embedded in the file or transformed into curves; 4) Tables and graphics can be made in Word (.docx) or Excel (.xlsx). Both tables and graphs are listed in order of appearance with Arabic numerals and have explanatory headings. Do not send the embedded graphics in Word. The use of screen-optimized formats (such as GIF, BMP, PICT, WPG) will not be accepted; sending low resolution images as a final file will jeopardize the inclusion of the article for not respecting the graphic quality required by AREA.
Data to include: after the title of the work, along with the author’s name, the institution or body to which it belongs in this order will be indicated: University, Faculty, Secretariat / Institute / Center / Department / Chair / Other, then the address, telephone (personal data won’t be published, it will be used for the journal to contact the authors) and electronic address (this e-mail will be published for contact the author along with the brief biographical on the section “About the authors”). In the case of several authors, a single epistolary counterpart —which is authorized in the note of originality— will be mentioned. At the end of the article a brief biographical note of each author will be provided (approximately 100 words), including academic activity and publications. AREA declines any responsibility for possible conflicts arising from the authorship of the submitted works.
ON THE ELABORATION OF APPOINTMENTS AND THE REFERENCE LIST
AREA is based on the standards developed by the American Psychological Association (APA); here we present an abbreviated compilation with some examples for the preparation of the article, but if you have any doubt, we recommend consulting the rules on the association’s website <APA>.
Appointments and submissions to bibliographical references: textual citations of less than 40 words are included in the same paragraph identifying the cited text by means of double quotes. Single quotes are only used for one appointment within another appointment. Quotations of more than 40 words are written in a separate paragraph with continuous indentation. It is advisable to quote in the original language, if this differs from the language of the article, the following translation is added in brackets; the cited material, including spelling and punctuation (even if there are errors should be clarified by using [sic]) must be respected verbatim. Any other necessary clarification is indicated in brackets; likewise, if part of the text is omitted, it is indicated with ellipses in brackets.
The citations must be accompanied by the mention of the source consulted by the author-date-page system: surname, year of publication, number of pages separated by commas and in parentheses, for example (Montaner, 2002, p.140) or (Maldonado, 1974, pp. 56-57). Sometimes it is usually appropriate to place the last name of the author outside the parentheses so that the speech is more fluid, referring in this case only with year of publication and number of pages, for example (2002, p.140). These references are used whenever an appointment is made and in these cases, it is not necessary to mention the title of the work within the text itself. When a paraphrase is made to ideas or concepts from other works, it is recommended to make the reference to the page (s) in parentheses from where the texts are being taken. Omitting the sources of quotations or paraphrasing is considered plagiarism and goes against the ethics and good practices held by AREA.
If the appointment has one or two authors, both surnames are always cited, for example (Pérez y García, 2005) for the texts in Spanish; (David & Travis, 2010), if the surnames are outside the parentheses the term and, David and Travis (2010) is used for the texts in English; and e (Souza e Peres, 2011) for texts in Portuguese. If the appointment has three, four or five authors, all the surnames separated by a comma are named in the first intervention (with the same rule mentioned above for each language –y, and or &, and e-and the following mentions the first author is mentioned. followed by the expression et al., for example (García, Pérez, Alonso and Rodríguez, 2008) and following, García et al. (2008). If the citation has six or more authors, the first is followed by the expression et al. For example, Pérez et al. (2012) If more than one work is cited on the same subject, the references are separated by semicolons, for example (García and Andrade, 2009, Jones and Smith, 2010); if they are integrated into the text, it is expressed as exemplified below, according to García and Andrade (2009) and Jones and Smith (2010), once again the conjunction rule for each language must be respected.
Notes: notes can be used when you want to expand a concept or add a comment without interrupting the continuity of the speech. No notes are used to refer consulted or confrontational bibliography. Submissions to notes are indicated in the text by means of a superscript. The section containing the notes is located at the end of the article and before the list of references.
List of bibliographical references: at the end of the document there should be a list of references that strictly correspond to the quotations and paraphrases mentioned in the text. It should be titled as References (not Bibliography or Bibliographic References).
Annexes: if any, they go immediately after the References.
