AREA 31 JOURNAL DOSSIER
Architecture, representation, narrative: world building from the visualization of the digital present

The architectural landscape of the past two decades exhibits a diverse and multifaceted panorama regarding systems and modalities of representation, amplified by the fast evolution in the realm of digitality. This technical evolution intrinsically relates to the way we comprehend design practices in Architecture, a discipline that addresses, among others, the issue of project representation.

World building is a term used in the narrative field, associated with literature, cinema, and video games. It refers to the process of constructing and developing the context in which a narrative unfolds, which, from multiple perspectives, can be entirely fictitious or an altered representation of our own world. The idea of representation as world construction involves a feedback mechanism on the constructed world that manages not only the creation of geography, history, or culture, but also the physical and natural rules, political and cultural systems that enable it.

In these terms, the architectural project, and especially its representation, creates a world that simultaneously modifies both the project and its representation within this possible speculation of architectural narrative.

The call for this dossier aims for authors to explore architectural design as a tool to imagine and shape alternative futures, proposing disruptive narratives.

In this context, the articles are expected to address the relationship between speculative design that can emerge from architectural world building and its representation, exploring new possibilities of an eccentric architectural eclecticism born when world creation and visual expression intertwine. Ultimately, relying on representation, the goal is to encourage theoretical production and foster methodological reflection on how Architecture becomes a medium to redefine the world through innovative imagination, with the intention of compiling research on speculative projects that propose new worlds, introduce new narratives, invite the creation of new cultures, and speculate on the scenarios that can retroactively fertilize them.
